Man was created in God’s image. In His image was created man and woman, to proclaim to the world, His perfection.
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Genesis 1:27
Being the image of God, man and woman were higher than the rest of God’s creation. They had something none of His previous creations did – willpower. Moved by God’s Love for them and the immense bounty provided for them in the Garden of Eden, they loved God above all else and submitted to His Will. They were both equal in dignity and influence because the Will of God guided them both and neither one of their wills was superior to the others.
The man and his wife did not have to work for their sustenance and were provided for in every way by God. They were close to God and were naked and unashamed. In return God gave them dominion over all his creation but forbade them from the fruit of the tree in the centre of the Garden. This command He gave to Adam, the keeper of the Garden.
But, the serpent found them in the Garden and tempted them with promises of God-like power and eternal life.
